MGT 965 GNAM:Sustainability & Development in Africa

Postgraduate course

Project description

The idea of usiness as a Force for Good is demonstrated in a growing number of businesses that are creating positive value in the society and becoming more responsible towards the environment in which they operate. As agents of change, many businesses are moving beyond profit maximisation and market competition to adopt sustainable business models, operations, innovation and collaboration to drive socio-environmental solutions amid dire developmental contexts in a number of African countries. The course usiness as a Force for Good: Sustainability and Sustainable Development in Africa? therefore, seeks to explore new and innovative ideas on how businesses can address complex socio-environmental issues- such as poverty, inequality, climate change, natural resource constraints - and create positive value in the society while remaining profitable. The course also seeks to better understand in a very human and pragmatic way the contours of the challenges around sustainable development faced by societies across Africa. The course is a collaborative offering across schools of the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) and draws together cases, readings and perspectives of practitioners from business, academia, government and civil society on the topic of sustainable development and sustainability.
