This class is an introduction to environmental justice as a concept and a movement. We start with the idea of justice. What does it mean as a moral, legal, and ethical proposition? We then ask what it means to modify justice with the adjectives environmental or climate. We explore how these ideas came to play an important if not central role in environmental policy. We use material from law, natural and social sciences, literature, and activists to explore the current state of environmental justice as a movement and policy imperative. We then turn to climate change to explore how the principles of environmental justice inform or ought to inform climate policy.
