This course introduces students to the principles of sustainable development and how they apply to business. It is a critical component of modern business practice with implications for the environment, society (current and future generations) and the economy. The course begins by taking students on a walk-through the evolution of the concept of sustainable development, exploring its inherent paradoxes, and the subsequent rise of alternative development paradigms (e.g. Gross National Happiness, Human Development Index, OECD Better Life Index). Students will gain an understanding into how businesses can meet their environmental, social and economic responsibilities through the framework of sustainable development. Students will develop knowledge and skills that will allow them to undertake a critical analysis of the setting and measuring of development targets and thus the capacity for sustainable development in the real world.
