BSOC 2061 Ethics and the Environment

Undergraduate course

Project description

Politicians, scientists, andcitizens worldwide face manyenvironmental issues today, butthey are neither simple nor straightforward. Moreover, there are many ways to understandhow we have, do,andcould valuetheenvironmentfrom animal rightsandwise use to deep ecologyandecofeminism. This class acquaints students with some ofthechallenging moral issues that arise inthecontext ofenvironmental managementandpolicy-making, both inthepastandthepresent.Environmental concerns also highlight important economic, epistemological, legal, political, andsocial issues in assessing our moral obligations to nature as well as other humans. This course examines various perspectives expressed in both contemporaryandhistorical debates overenvironmentalethicsby exploring four central questions: What is nature? Who counts inenvironmentalethics? How do we know nature? Whose nature?
