DSOC 2130 Mother Nature Fights Back? The Promises and Paradoxes of Sustainable Development

Undergraduate course

Project description

Human healthandlivelihoods are closely coupled tothehealth oftheenvironment but this increasingly seems like a hopeless dilemma. How can we produce enough nutritious food forthegrowing populationandimprovethestandard of living, while sustaining Earths diminishing natural resources, avoiding catastrophic climate change, andperhaps even leaving room fortheplanets other inhabitants? This is especially critical in developing countries where ruralandurban people are experiencing rapid transformation andstark choices. In one semester, we cant solve allthese problems, but we will seek to understandhowtheuseandmanagement of natural resourcesandthehistory ofdevelopmentandglobalization are intertwined with global food securityandhealth, cultureandidentity, livelihood security, andintergenerational environmental justice.
