ARCHTECH 108 : Introduction to Technology and Sustainability

Undergraduate course

Project description

Introduction to structural concepts and construction principles, including building elements, systems and foundation options. Properties of commonly used construction materials, with a focus on timber frame constructions, their regulatory context, applications and detailing, and appropriate ways of applying the principles to design studio projects. Climate and vernacular architecture. Principles of climate-sensitive design. Sustainability and resilience in the built environment.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate an understanding of the structural and construction principles and systems for timber-framed small-scale residential buildings. (Capability 1.2) Demonstrate and understand characteristics and behaviour of timber as a building material. (Capability 2.2) Demonstrate 3. Understand the components and connections and fasteners of timber-framed small-scale buildings. (Capability 3.2) Apply fundamental knowledge for the relationship between material and construction. (Capability 4.1) Demonstrate an understanding of the New Zealand Standard of timber-framed small-scale residential houses. (Capability 5.1) Use the appropriate disciplinary vocabulary. (Capability 6.1) Demonstrate the achievement of the outcomes above, as individual student work. (Capability 5.3)
