MAORIHTH 201 : Introduction to M?ori Health
Undergraduate courseProject description
M?ori society, culture and values are explored. Historical processes are reviewed within the context of the Treaty of Waitangi. The course will examine how these factors underpin the basic determinants of health and shape contemporary M?ori health status in Aotearoa. Different approaches to improving M?ori health and reducing inequalities will be critically examined.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: Develop an awareness of M?ori culture, society and values. (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.3, 4.1 and 4.2) Obtain a comprehensive historical and contemporary overview of the Treaty of Waitangi. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 6.1 and 6.3) Explore the basic determinants of health that shape contemporary M?ori health status. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 5.1, 6.2 and 6.3) Critically examine different approaches to improving M?ori health and reducing inequities. (Capability 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 4.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
