Lately, this course has provided students with opportunities to reflect on the purpose of education in the context of current events. When we discuss (for example) ways in which education is understood as a public good, or as a means to learn the rights and responsibilities of citizenship according to the social contract, we can consider those same issues in relation to today's debates - including arguments about individual freedoms versus social responsibility!

By the end of this course, students will be able to: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the links between education and society (Capability 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 4.1, 4.2 and 6.1) Critically analyse selected ideas from historical, sociological and philosophical perspectives that explore the nature and purpose of education (Capability 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role that different views on education throughout time have played in the formation of today�s education system in New Zealand (Capability 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 4.1, 4.2, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3)
