EDUC 213 : Education and Social Justice

Project description

Can education contribute to social justice? A critical examination of the contemporary concern with social justice in education. Drawing on local and international research, this course explores debates about the nature of power, and the ways that gender and sexuality, ethnicity, indigeneity, social class, and other social identities are taken up in the pursuit of social justice within education.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: Explore possible relationships between education and social justice (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1, 6.1 and 6.2) Gain content knowledge about schooling and diverse applications of the concept of social justice in educational settings (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3) Study in-depth pertinent readings in each area of the course (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 4.1, 6.1 and 6.2) Learn and use academic writing skills (Capability 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) Gain foundational understandings to enable progress into stage 3 Education courses (Capability 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 6.1 and 6.2)
