This course offers an examination of culturally authentic leadership practices in Aotearoa. This course is designed to increase understanding of why there is a need to have culturally aligned leadership and the implications this might have on culturally sustaining such leadership across a range of contexts.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: Critically discuss a range of Maori and/or indigenous leadership theories and models within historical and contemporary political and educational contexts (Capability 1.1, 2.1, 2.3, 3.1, 4.2 and 6.1) Identify key elements of a Kaupapa Maori approach to leadership in education (Capability 2.1, 3.1 and 6.1) Develop understanding of alternative perspectives of leadership (e.g. culturally responsive, student-centred, critical) (Capability 2.2, 3.2, 4.1 and 5.2) Learn to recognise, utilise, and apply critical leadership with the understanding that leadership is culturally situated. (Capability 2.3, 3.1, 4.1, 5.1 and 6.3)
