Examines efforts to revitalise M?ori language and selected indigenous languages through education. Includes interventions by both government and indigenous groups in policy, practices, and language rights. The approach is interdisciplinary, drawing on sociolinguistics, political theory, sociology, law and education, and international, with examples from Aotearoa, Europe, North America and the Pacific.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: Engage with the literature on the history and politics of M?ori language loss and revitalisation. (Capability 1.1, 2.3 and 5.2) Understand contemporary research in indigenous language revitalisation policies and practices. (Capability 1.1, 3.1 and 5.2) Understand intervention strategies in language loss and revitalisation in contexts relevant to M?ori and other indigenous groups. (Capability 3.1 and 5.2) Apply understanding of 1-3 above to contemporary M?ori language and education contexts. (Capability 2.2, 6.1 and 6.3)
